Goethe's Last Laugh
A downloadable Source Mod
Goethe is a total conversion mod for Half Life 2
In the abstract, it’s a working class power fantasy about addiction and revolution. Themes of death, apocalyptic gloom, political unrest, mild sexual fetishism and casual addiction ensue.
Take control of Jackson Ian Faust, a 300 year old, self destructive, misanthropic vampire, and investigate the many unusual phenomenon of Gondolas city, a fictional civilization set on the sinking monster island of Duciano.
You are squarely, heinously, shamelessly, and without discretion the most corrupt police officer in your entire district, and potentially of all time. You are not a good dude. You smoke meth, shoot heroin, drink to excess, rig dice, sell drugs, and kill people. You act with impunity and are regularly tyrannical.
Ferraro
Your partner, Francesco “Laidlaw” Ferraro, is the antithesis to all that which you (refuse to) stand for. He is, to you, a tight-wound metal puritanical prick with an obnoxious penchant for jazz.
To a more objective mind, he is the eccentric agent of some non-descript alphabet agency, who is - while generally good-natured and helpful - truly enigmatic, short-worded, curt, and secretive about the nature of his job. He’s also mildly omnipotent.
Oh Shit, There’s a Main Case?
You bet your ass there’s a main case.
This asshole.
Let’s get something straight - you hate wizards. You think they’re stupid, self-absorbed narcissists with an inflated sense of divine purpose. “A hat full of parlor tricks isn’t going to save your ass in a real fight,” you think to yourself.
This guy, though? He really takes the fucking cake.
Over the course of your journey, Faust will run in to a wide cast of characters;
- The Whipped Dog, a commune of pagan-satanic coke-head wanna-be rockstars, and their punk rock groupies.
- The Tskartel, a ruthless organized crime family run by Christian orthodox Russians
- The Powers That Be, a secret society of high status politicians, power-brokers, high-rollers, and occultists.
- Caesar and Jersey, willing mystical pawn and cosmic warmonging space terrorist, respectively.
These characters help Faust to turn his unique powers - both supernatural and institutional - against the corrupt systems of oppression he starts off by perpetuating.
